Hey! Guess What?! I Can Write Too!

A group of students are testing their mobile app this week at UT Arlington which will ease the process of reserving rooms and halls in the university center, group social media leader Tara Jones said. For the past three months, five communication students at the University of Texas at Arlington have been working on their mobile app designed to make the process of reserving rooms and halls in the E.H. Hereford University Center easier. The mobile app is called Room Reserve and it is predicted to be ready for launch by end of summer. The user will be able to select options like what size of room, room layout, and extra options like audio video equipment. After the user submits their request, the university center staff will respond to the request to discuss room and date availability and pricing.

The mobile app will function as a two way communication between the user and the university center facility staff, group member Crystal Caldwell said.

The Room Reserve app required some technical skills to pull off. The group of students used database programing and HTML design skills to create their app. The group first started with a website that can be seen on any computer or mobile device to advertise their app. They then setup social media to promote the app. The group currently is in the process of creating posters to advertise and how to use videos.

“We are working hard to cover every outlet possible in order to spread the word of the Room Reserve app,” Tara Jones said.

The group of students are currently testing their app this week by letting other students and University of Texas at Arlington faculty members use the app and provide feedback. Although the app has much work needed to be done, the app in its current working state has provided some good feedback. Through this type of testing the group has been able to fix issues like slow load times, server connectivity issues, and need of more information issues. Feedback has provided valuable insight in the group’s first app design. The group has been able to focus more on user experience rather than useless and counterproductive features.

“I think the room reserve site is an excellent idea,” student tester Trey King said. “Student organizations as well as professors and businesses even could use this tool to quickly and easily organization group meetings and events on campus.”

The group have not fully explored future options the app will include. However they have been accepting feedback and ideas for future development.

The app could have a troubleshooting feature related to the room you were in, Sr. Lecturer of Communication Technology Dr. Brian Horton said.

The idea for Room Reserve started in a communication technology class group discussion. The idea first aimed at helping freelancers, entrepreneurs, and organizations find available space to conduct their meetings. The group took a look inward at University of Texas at Arlington and decided that an app for the university was the way to go. The Room Reserve app is set to release this summer.
